Tag Rugby is a form of non-contact (no tackling or barging) rugby. It is an improvement on ‘New Image’ Rugby (touch rugby) which itself has proved popular over recent years.
In Tag Rugby, players wear a light belt with two ribbons attached by Velcro. A “tackle” is simply the removal of one of the two tags by a defender and then the ball carrier must pass. Both players are then out of play until the tag has been returned and placed back on the belt.
In its simplest form Tag Rugby can be played without scrums or line-outs with teams as small as 4 a side. Players need no previous knowledge of rugby to get started, which makes the game ideal for players of any gender, age, physique or ability.
Tag Rugby develops running skills, evasion skills, defensive skills and handling skills.
Tag Rugby can be played on any surface, inside or out.
Tag Rugby is very flexible allowing rules, such as knock-ons & offside, and set pieces, such as scrums, line-outs & mauls, to be added as players get more competent
Attacking & defending strategies are very different to other invasion games making it ideal for use in the KS2 & KS3 games curriculum.
